“EVNI is a collection of giant furniture developed by Italian designer Umberto Dattola. The artist creates all kinds of woodwork that blends carpentry and design. For this project, he took old pieces of furniture and transformed them into these unique, lively pieces. The oversized furniture was first revealed at Milan Design Week and is reminiscent of a fantasy scene, like something directly out of Alice in Wonderland.

EVNI is a project that gives life and expression to otherwise inanimate objects. Through the work, Dattola explores the possibility that everyday objects absorb emotions and carry those feelings throughout the course of existence. Dattola explains: “What, of our passions, remain in the object during our life? Can we consider that some objects follow us during our entire life, absorbing our passions, moments of happiness, and moments of sadness? The question is: are we sure that all our sentiments pass without any influence around us?” The final product certainly seems to have a life of its own. With their long, wavy legs, the surreal pieces look like they might get up and scurry away at any moment.”

An apartment-esque treehouse designed for one person and far more birds (78 in fact) by nendo. Created to encourage and promote nature activities, it is located in a forest in Komoro City, Japan. Once inside, you are able to look into the birdhouses through the little holes.

I want little holes to peek into other people’s houses without it being as creepy as it sounds.

“The Solar Pavilion represents the apogee of what you could call The Smithson’s Hair-Shirt Modernism. A timber framed pavilion perched on an existing brick wall without heating or plumbing, this is a building that exempified their interest in ‘ordinariness and light’. It is an austere little pavilion rooted in a rigorous aesthetic purity.

This strain of thought has been taken up by what you might call the ‘ordinary and every day’ school of British architects: Caruso St John, Sergison Bates, Lynch Architects. Sergison Bates recently renovated the Solar House, almost as an act of homage rather than a straightforward refurbishment. Sergison Bates’ work has its roots in A and P’s interest in simplicity grounded in a notion of ordinariness. This, of course, is quite different from Minimalism, which attempts to deny the everyday rather than celebrate or accommodate it. The Smithson’s sense of the everyday allows for awkwardness and a mix of the platonic and the quotidian. Needless to say decoration and ornament find no place in this austere aesthetic, which has a strong Anglo-Saxon strain of puritanism to it. This is manifested in a desire to avoid the flashy, the ephemeral and the luxurious. There is a humbleness to this kind of architecture as well as a lack of interest in spatial gymnastics or specious shape throwing.”

Aberdeen Architectural design for sheltered housing and mixed use development

The design appreciates the past- by valuing the existing tectonic language of the industrial area, and the lives of the residents. The details, materials, texture, light, colour, smell… will etch onto the memories of grandchildren who visit as well as subtly enriching the daily lives of the elderly.

There is no melancholy of the present here. Instead, in the shadows (which prove the sunshine), there is a nostalgia and warmth which connects the years and generations. This building rejects temporality. Wood and brick will mark, wear, and grow richer over time, and will stand to see generations of grandchildren drive past and fondly remember their childhood visits.

Biodiversity and responsibility is encouraged through planted terraces, and high-density building redefines the area and points to sustainable city form. The building is highly insulated, oriented to catch maximum sun, and heated using a warm water radiative system.

A project for the Norwegian city of Åndalsnes that was awarded third prize in an open international masterplan competition. Mobile buildings roll on old train tracks as season and situations change, complementing the city and landscape with facilities like a rolling hotel, a rolling public bath, a rolling park and a rolling concert hall.
